                      Egyptian Folkloric Lecture and Demonstration
                      with Päivi Mielikäinen and Farrah

                      Picture
From the Authentic to the Fantastic: Egypt's Folkloric Traditions. Is there a "pure" Egyptian dance form?  Which moves are really authentic? How have traditional forms changed to suit the modern world? Come on a fascinating journey through Egypt's folkloric traditions with Päivi Mielikäinen, artistic director of Farrah, Sydney's only Egyptian Folkloric Dance troupe. Featuring live performances by Farrah, as well as costume displays and rare ethnographic footage, Päivi will showcase a range of folkloric styles including Nubian, Haggala, Alexandrian and Andalusian. From the most authentic dances, still enjoyed in villages today, to fantasy pieces that hark back to an imagined past, discover how folkloric dance has evolved and been adapted to suit the stage, the politics of a newly independent nation and the tastes of dancers and audiences internationally.

                      Turkish Kolbasti
                      with Leonie Sukan (Sydney, NSW)

                      Picture
The latest dance craze sweeping Turkey is Kolbasti. Originating in a town called Trabzon on the black sea, it was created by the Trabzon football supporters to encourage and celebrate their team. It soon traveled around Turkey along with the team and was taken up and added to wherever it went. This has resulted in influences from other villages and modern dance. There are whole kolbasti teams competing - it's fun, stimulating and energetic.

Shimmies, Layers, and a Drum Solo to Boot!
                      with Virginia Keft-Kennedy (Wollongong, NSW)

                      Picture
The drum solo is the most thrilling and also the most challenging part of a complete belly dance routine.  When performing a drum solo the role of the dancer is to become a direct visual representation of the music. In this workshop you will learn how to express commonly used Middle Eastern rhythms using punchy accents, flourishes, pops, shimmies and more! We will break down the elements of the drum solo to easily digestible parts and then put it all together into a snappy, dynamic, and fun drum solo choreography.
